Tasting Notes: Costa d’Amalfi Rosato is characterized by a vivid pink color and an intense hint of cherry, red currants and pomegranates, mixed together with notes of mediterranean herbs. Produced from grape varieties Piedirosso (locally known as per ‘e palummo) and Aglianico. Aglianico has been growing in Campania since the 7th century B.C. In Roman times, this was one of the main grapes used to make some of the most revered wines. It is said the Romans got it from the Greeks who introduced it to Italy. In Italian, Piedirosso means “red feet”. The grape was given this name because it has three branches as well as a russet colored stem making it look like a dove’s foot. The Costa d’Amalfi Rosato is aged for four months in stainless steel tanks. It has hints of raspberry and strawberry, light spices, violets and roses on the nose. It has firm structure with balanced acidity, tannins, and a nice rustic feel on the palate. This wine will pair nicely with antipasti, eggplant, and pasta dishes with fish sauces. We recommend enjoying it with an Octopus Salad.
Estate History: The Marisa Cuomo winery was established in 1980 by Andrea Ferraioli and Marisa Cuomo. Having bought the estate and vineyards off his family members, Andrea gifted it to Marisa upon marriage. Together the couple revitalized the formerly neglected vineyards, making them what they are today. The estate is located on the rocks of Furore on the Amalfi Coast, where it is exposed to the elements and vines are planted along vertical rock cliffs. Because of the terrain, harvest is done by hand with the harvesters having to climb up and down stone steps carved out of the cliffside. The picked grapes are then carried out of the vineyards on donkeys or small monorail systems. The wine cellar has been built into the rock allowing them to use current technological advances as well as nature to vinify the wine. By combining the knowledge passed down from local winemakers, ancient winemaking traditions, and the application of new technology, the Marisa Cuomo estate produces wines appreciated by wine lovers all over the world.
