Bolgheri is a relatively young region to the north of the Maremma Tuscan coast and just south of Livorno. Named for the idyllic town of Bolgheri, its history is intertwined with that of Tenuta San Guido, the producer of Sassicaia, the first ‘Super Tuscan’ wine. 
Breaking from tradition and using Bordeaux as inspiration, the wines were typically blends from international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, among others. Sassicaia took the world by storm and was soon followed by many estates working with the exceptional climate, soils and exposure of the Bolgheri region.
